This is a single post from deeden.co.uk made during the period May 2002 to April 2009. During a previous grand redesign I decided to make a break with the past and consign the old entries to history. This entry is from April 2004 and lives here forevermore.

Secondhand book shops in Belfast

In the last week I’ve had 2 conversations about 2nd hand bookshops around Belfast. It got me thinking that there are probably a good few I don’t know about. I only really know the ones in the city centre, the rest of the city is a mystery to me. Off the top of my head I can think of the following ones, most of which I’m listing by location as I don’t know their names:

  • North Street, opposite the Northern Whig.
  • In North Street Arcade.
  • In the arcade between Great Victoria Street and Glengall Bus Station.
  • War on Want Bookshop on Botanic Avenue.
  • Donegall Pass, 100 metres down on the right if you go from Shaftesbury Square.
  • Queens Student Union.
  • University Street, on the left as you head from Queens towards Bradbury Place.
  • Near Palestine Street in the Holylands, a small charity bookshop on a corner. I don’t know if that’s there anymore?

There were a few more I used to visit but they’ve disappeared in the last few years sadly. Botanic Books was opposite the War on Want bookshop on Botanic Avenue. Al Libris was in the Victoria centre but I’ve been told that it has now closed. There was a shop in Shaftesbury Square but it closed down and was replaced by the Northern Ireland Football Supporters Club Bar.

If you know of any more, and I’m sure you do feel free to add a comment. I may at some point put a list together for the I Love NI site, you never know.
