Registering an expiring domain

A domain I’d like to register, which is already registered by someone else, expires later this month. What’s the best way of maximising my chance of getting the domain? I know that it won’t become available on the day, so I’ll have to keep an eye on it for a good while, possibly months. Is there any clever service that I can use to check for me? Or is there a service I can use that will register the domain for me once it becomes free?

Of course all of this is on the assumption that the current owner of the domain doesn’t renew the registration.
