This is a single post from deeden.co.uk made during the period May 2002 to April 2009. During a previous grand redesign I decided to make a break with the past and consign the old entries to history. This entry is from August 2003 and lives here forevermore.

Panic on the streets of Belfast

As Andy Jaffrey has mentioned we had a spectacular thunder and lightning storm yesterday evening over most of Northern Ireland. It was easily the loudest I’ve been through, and the closest. At one point the City Hospital, which I live just opposite, got a direct hit to the roof. You could see smoke rising from where it was hit. Various other parts of Belfast also got hit, some worse than others.

One of the things that we did notice during the storm was the number of people who were walking around with umbrellas while lightning strikes were happening within hundreds of metres of them. Not the cleverest thing to be doing.

Finally, if lightning is an act of god and insurers won’t cover you, can you sue the church (assuming you can work out which one to blame) for damage? I think we should know :)
