Odds and ends - 28th of July 2003
I’ve failed to live up to the high(ish) standards of posting I set for myself in June. This month has been a bit of a washout really. So in order to assuage a number of people, I will now do a brief round-up of news and opinions.
- YAPC::Europe is to be held in Belfast next year. Venues, dates and other stuff will apparently be announced at a future date.
- Our camera is excellent. As previously mentioned we bought a Canon Powershot A70 digital camera. Well it was used while I was in London and it performed an admirable job. I’ll review it in some better way for Marc at some point later.
- I’ve been reading The Kenneth Williams Diaries for the last week or two. Very funny, very nasty, very sad. One of the most interesting books I’ve read in the last few years.
- My friend Sarah has returned to Belfast, yay!
- The football season starts properly, for Manchester City at least, in 17 days. The might of Total Network Solutions awaits us, a classic banana skin if ever I saw one.
- I’m currently rated at 1461 for standard play on FICS. It was higher but I’ve slipped in the last week. I still reckon it’s inflated, it should be a good hundred less. As for my blitz rating, I refuse to disclose that other than to say it’s pitiful.
- Belfast needs a good bookshop. Waterstones, Easons and WH Smith are pretty awful really. Just one good shop would be nice. Yes I am suffering from post-London bookshop blues.
- Having watched The Day the Earth Stood Still for the first time in years on Saturday, I must say that it’s as good as I remember. A classic. I didn’t realise that it was directed by Robert Wise who also directed West Side Story and The Sound of Music, as well as editing Citizen Kane.
