This is a single post from deeden.co.uk made during the period May 2002 to April 2009. During a previous grand redesign I decided to make a break with the past and consign the old entries to history. This entry is from April 2003 and lives here forevermore.

History - then and now

For a long time I’ve had the desire to see modern pictures taken from the same location as old pictures. The idea would be to take the take the picture from the same position, or a close as is possible and then to display them together to see what has changed and what has remained the same. For this to work any picture with a decent bit of background would do the job. Something for comparison basically. It doesn’t have to be something of great historical interest, although I’d be interested in seeing the modern views from the site of the red army flying the flag on the reichstag or the view from the Rockefeller center, it could just be fairly routine old family pictures. A difference of 20 years could make the comparison interesting.

This has come back into my mind due to the excellent Vertigo - Then and Now page which has taken screen grabs from Hitchcock’s masterpiece and taken new pictures from the same spots. It’s fascinating to see what’s still there and how much has changed in some, but not in others. Thanks to Mark at Boing Boing for coming across this.
