This is a single post from deeden.co.uk made during the period May 2002 to April 2009. During a previous grand redesign I decided to make a break with the past and consign the old entries to history. This entry is from May 2002 and lives here forevermore.

Speech, hey

Marc has a point about the Northern Ireland accent, it’s very difficult to understand. When I first came to Belfast I had a very hard time making out what anyone was saying, as did the other people I got to know from outside Northern Ireland. It wasn’t just the accent (or accents as there are many) it was also the speed at which people talk.

Northern Ireland speakers speak very fast (in a kind of machine-gun way) and it does take a good while to get used to it. I’ve noticed that when I go away (to Manchester for example) my relatives struggle to make out what I’m saying for a while. Eventually they pick up the accent and I slow my talking down to normal speed!

Anyway whilst I’ve been typing this the latest beta version of Omniweb has downloaded, so I’m going to go and start it up for a quick play. It’s a lovely browser, despite the annoying limitations in CSS support.
